.ME Whois Blunders At GoDaddy
As expected the new .ME extension which has become available for registration in the last few days have been massively poular with registrations going through the roof, domains are being registered faster than anyone has expected, most of the best domains are allready gone with the 3 letters closely behind.
However there has been just one slight hitch at a certain well known registrar. Customers registering .ME domains at GoDaddy got a shock when they got an email from GoDaddy saying their domains had not been registered, despite the fact they were very clearly in the customers accounts. Some have received refunds but alot of customers are being left out of pocket and without their perfect .ME domain.
If that wasn't enough in a lot of cases customers later found out that they domain which they had bought had gone to auction at the registry website domen.me even though they had paid for it and the domain showed up as available before registration in the godaddy whois database.
Whether or not this was a problem with the .me whois database nobody knows for certain yet, but one thing is for certain, there seem to be no such problems at other registrars such as NameCheap.com and I can testify to that.
However a lot of domains people had thought they'd registered were also on the premium domain list at domen.me yet these domains showed as available at GoDaddy and they were charged but most received a refund shortly after. Which begs the question, how can such a reputable registrar allow their whois database to become so innaccurate? People excpect to be able to trust reputable companies such as GoDaddy and know that their whois info is accurate and up-to-date. Or was this caused by the sheer volume of registrations causing the database to have to play the catchup game, or just miss some updates alltogether?
If you've been affected by this problem we recommend that you find out exactly what domains you registered which were not registered and request a refund for them if you haven't done so allready. Also you should give GoDaddy a bit of extra time to deal with your request considering the number they have to deal with.
We'll keep you updated as we learn more about this blunder
